Dozen of migrants drown off Libyan Coast. They were actually on their way to Italy passing through the Mediterranean Sea when the incident occurred.
Currently along the shores of Libyan city of Zawiya, over 90 bodies of African migrants have been deposited by arrival waves. It is not certain how many of them boarded the boat but over 100 African migrants have been feared death.
“The rate at which African migrants have died through this route has risen in recent time,”the authorities stated.
The rubber boat used by the migrants was located nearby and it is believed that more bodies may be found as the boat carries about 120 people.
Most of the bodies found where children.
According to BBC, a spokesman for the Libyan Red Crescent – the country’s Red Cross – said the bodies were retrieved by its workers.
Mohammed al-Misrati said
“Local authorities would take the bodies to a cemetery for unidentified people in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.”
The International Organisation for Migration, said:
“The boat that sank had left Libya on Saturday with 110 people on board.”
The same incident took place last year and ukrido.com learnt that over 5000 migrants were drowned on their way to Italy passing through the Mediterranean Sea.
According to The Red Crescent, the dead bodies of the unidentified ones will be buried in a cemetery in Tripoli, Libya.
Ayoub Gassim, the Libyan coast guard spokesman also confirmed the incident and he said:
“over 500 migrants were rescued at sea on Friday and Saturday near the city of Sabratha, to the west of Zawiya.
“The boats were between five and seven miles (8-11km) from the coast of Libya.
He also said:
“Smugglers were now using larger rubber boats in order to pack more migrants in, some carrying up to 180 people.
“The boats are weak, and loading them so heavily dramatically raises the risk of sinking.
Gassim further said:
“We are seeing the new boats, which are not equipped with anything, but they carry more people,” .
“This is going to be even more disastrous to the migrants.”
