The court session on Tuesday involving the leader of IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu and President Buhari’s led administration took a different dimension as Mr. Nnamdi Kanu accused President Buhari of lying.
According to Mr. Kanu,“The president can intimidate the judges, but he cannot do that to me. Tell him he has lied,”.
The whole drama started when a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja decided on an application requesting for protection of witnesses in current trial of the IPOB leader as well as others involved in the treason offense.
On granting the application, Justice Binta approved the witnesses some level of protection during the court session. The judge said ” The witnesses will have special entrances to and outside the court,”. The court also look forward to providing screen guards and special training for two days on how the witnesses will walk into the court and exit the court as well.
Shortly after ruling, the IPOB Leader, Mr. Kanu stood up to threaten never to allow the court subject him to a secret trial.
According to Mr. Kanu” You are killing my people and after killing my people, you said you want to try me in secret? The person is mad! Completely mad! Tell Buhari that is what I said, he is mad.He can not kill me! He can not kill me, he is a mad man. There is a contempt of court proceedings here, they don’t obey court order, you are telling me secret trials, is the person mad? Rubbish.
At a point, Mr. Kanu’s lawyer had to advise him not to speak further but to let his counsel’s team do his work for him.
Shortly after Mr. Kanu’s lawyer had term him down, other defendants made an outcry for an opportunity to seek futher counsel from their lawyers.
Thereafter the presiding judge, Mrs. Nyako had to state it clear to the defendants that she never meant to give them a secret trial. She said “It is not going to be a secret trial. The court will allow the defendants see the witnesses. The defendant counsel will also see the witnesses,”.
Mr. Kanu in response said “I won’t stand this travesty of Justice. Buhari spoke in public, he accused me in public. I must also be allowed to stand my trial in public. This is nonsense! I will give testimony before this court! By the time I finish, there will be no Nigeria. This is no Sharia court. It is a court that operates under the common law. “There will be no screening of witnesses, no fake identities or fake addresses. I cannot be tried in secret. No! Nnamdi Kanu cannot be jailed in secret! They are mad.
Mr Nnamdi Kanu alongside three others have been under trials over an 11 count charges.
