Shocking as Senator Nelson Effiong of PDP in Akwa ibom state defects to APC.
Senator Nelson Effiong of PDP in Akwa Ibom State took the Red carpet chamber and his former colleagues in PDP by surprise as he defects to the ruling party today 19th January, 2017.
Senator Nelson Effiong, from Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District was elected into the Senate under the platform of PDP and was also heavily supported by the former Governor and the current Minority Leader of the Senate, Godswil Akpabio.
In the course of announcing his defection, he cited divisions in the opposition party as the reason to defect.
Senator Nelson Effiong said:
“No reasonable politician who is worth his salt would remain and allow his people to be drifting about without a direction,” said Mr. Effiong. “So I have decided today, the 19th day of January, 2017 to resign from the PDP and move to the party that is bringing peace and direction to this country, the APC. So I move.”
Romour has it that the Senator had intended to dump his former party PDP, days ago but he was restricted by the leadership of the Senate.
Godswill Akpabio, the Senate Minority Leader and the former governor of Akwa Ibom state was shocked by his decision as he single handedly took Mr. Nelson Effiong to the Senate so to stand in one voice for the good people of Akwa Ibom.
The Minority Leader of the Senate spoke against Senator Nelson’s decision to defect and also stated that there was no division in the party and as a matter of fact, the seat of Senator Nelson Effiong, must remain vacant.
Senator Nelson Effiong, was the former speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly under the then administration of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Governor. They work together and Mr. Nelson served Akpabio with all form of loyalty not till today when he choose to put an end to his loyalty.
This is going to be a big stab to the Minority Leader of the Senate, one that will stand the taste of time and may attract as a huge threat to the current Governor of Akwa Ibom state Emmanuel Udom, who happens to come from the same senatorial district with Senator Nelson Effiong.
From Mr. Nelson’s decision, it is quite obvious that more members of the PDP in Akwa Ibom State may defect especially now that the governor has dropped his former commissioners.
Dear Ukrido’s readers, now that a PDP Senator from Akwa Ibom has defected to APC, do you think Senator Akpabio will have what it takes to declare his seat vacant?
