Tension as Nigerian Warship departs to sack Gambian’s President from dispensing hisconstitutional duty in office.
The Economic Community of West African States troops in Senegal, will be joined by the Nigerian troops today, 18th Jan. 2017 so to make sure that the Gambian’s President Yahya Jammeh will step down tomorrow.
From Senegal, the Nigerian troops will move to the coast of Gambia so to participate in the assignment.
A senior military personnel in the Nigerian Air Force said:
“I can confirm to you that men of the Air Force will leave for Senegal tomorrow (Wednesday). They will be briefed by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, at the Kainji base in Niger State.
“That Nigeria is deploying troops is now a certainty after several meetings with The Gambian president yielded no result. The Chiefs of Defence Staff of ECOWAS countries came to Abuja on Saturday, where they discussed what components each member state is expected to contribute to the troops that will force Yahya Jammeh out.
“The troops are expected to stay for two weeks and they will be received at a base in Senegal.”
Another personnel from the Nigerian Military said that the NNS Unity will sail from Lagos to Ghana where they will finally depart.
According to him:
“Senegal is the host country for the troops, as it would be easy to launch an attack from there.”
When contacted the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, they said they weren’t aware of such deployment saying that the issue was arranged by the political leaders.
According to the Director in Defence Information Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar, he said:
“We should not drag the Nigerian military into a political issue. What is happening is a political discussion between the ECOWAS leaders, aimed at solving a political impasse in one of its member states.
“Whatever they agreed to do is what will happen. Therefore, the military is not for any engagement regarding Jammeh or any other person for that matter.”
The attentions of African leaders have been drawn to the situation in Gambia where the sitting President Yahya Jammeh, has insisted never to step down for Adam Barrow after he was defeated in the last Presidential election.
West African leaders have visited President Yahya Jammeh severally to persuade him to step down for peace but Jammeh insist never to hand over power to Barrow.
After the last meeting with the African leaders, Jammeh went ahead to declare a 90 days state of emergency 23 hours to the end of his administration.
